Catching up with Maria
It has been a while since we last posted some news on Maria and she has been having a busy period.
After returning home in December, Maria found the contrast in weather quite a change, leaving London with the temperatures hovering around freezing while soaring into the mid thirties in São Paulo!
“I wasn’t away that long but it is an incredible difference,” she said. “Suddenly I was playing outside in the heat in shorts after being indoors with several layers on!
“Of course, it is summer in Brazil so you have to get used to it being hot, and it has been unbelievably hot for months now.”
She had plenty to catch up on on her return, including setting up several meetings and helping out with some clinics at her home club, Sociedade Harmonia Tênis.
“It was busy but fun. I took Panettoni to the junior academy clinic to give it a festive feel and they loved it!”
Honoured by Moet et Chandon and Trousseau
Maria also received another accolade of recognition, this time from Moet et Chandon, who presented her with a Jeroboam of champagne at the Trousseau flagship store in São Paulo in celebration of fifty years since her last Wimbledon singles title in 1964.
“It was a wonderful occasion,” Maria told her website. “They gave me an enormous bottle of Rosé Imperial champagne in a lovely presentation wooden box.
“It was three litres of champagne [4 bottles] so I decided to share it with my family at Christmas and they absolutely loved it!
“I have the presentation box at home with the empty bottle, which has ‘M Esther Wimbledon 50’ on it above the label.”
Adriana and Romeu Trussardi Neto opened their first Trousseau shop in São Paulo in 1991, since when the company has expanded into the major cities throughout Brazil and can also be found online through its virtual store.
A Friend of Rolex Brasil
Maria has since also become a Friend of Rolex, promoting the famous Swiss brand in Brazil and internationally.
“I am delighted to be associated with Rolex because the luxury brand has been supporting tennis around the world for a long time, particularly at Wimbledon,” Maria said.
Through it’s sponsorship at Wimbledon and the Australian Open as well as of Swiss phenomenon Roger Federer, Rolex has cultivated a privileged relationship with tennis.
Since its founding in the early 20th century, Rolex sought to partner with activities and personalities that embody passion, excellence and precision and naturally gravitated toward the world of tennis, forming an alliance that dates back to the late 1970s when the brand became the Official Timekeeper of Wimbledon.
Rolex is also the proud sponsor of many other prestigious tennis events, such as the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, Monte Carlo and Shanghai.
“I am looking forward to my collaboration with Stephan [Meili] and his colleagues at Rolex over the coming months,” added Maria.
Rolex is a co-sponsor of the coming Rio Open later this month.
